About Nairobi National Park

Nairobi National Park was the first national park in Kenya. Compared to the other national parks in Africa, the park remains the smallest stretching at 117.21 km2 with a 7 km distance from Nairobi’s center.

Nairobi national park has existed since 1946 when it was gazetted as a national park, different from the other parks, it is electric fenced on the three sides of the northern, eastern, and western boundaries, the southern side is not fenced off to allow animals move from the park and the nearby kitenge plains.

Even though the park is small and closer to the city, the park has a variety of wildlife species habituating in the savannah grasslands, the segmented Acacia woodlands, the rocky valleys, and the gorges in the park thou popular for being a sanctuary for the black rhinoceros, other species include lion, leopard, African buffalo, black rhinoceros, giraffe, hippopotamus, spotted hyena, blue wildebeest, plains zebra, cheetah, Thomson’s gazelle, Grant’s gazelle, common eland, impala, hartebeest, waterbuck, common warthog, olive baboon, black-backed jackal, common ostrich, Crocodiles, wildebeest, zebra. The park is also home to several bird species with over 500 permanent species and 20 migratory species like the African Crowned Eagle and Kori Bustard, Secretary bird, African skimmer, Grey-crowned Crane, Bateleur, Augur Buzzard,   Martial Eagle, Fox Kestrel, African Fish Eagle and many more.

BIRD WATCHING

Nairobi National Park nests over 500 permanent species with 20 seasonal species a factor that ranks the park among the best birding locations in Kenya and a keen bird watcher might spot over 100 species a day with the help of binoculars for clear spotting in the savannah grasslands, acacia woodlands and the thorny bushes.

Possible bird sightings include the African Crowned Eagle and Kori Bustard, Secretary bird, African skimmer, Grey-crowned Crane, Bateleur, Augur Buzzard,   Martial Eagle, Fox Kestrel, African Fish Eagle and many more.

GAME DRIVE

Nairobi National Park hosts a diverse wildlife population of over 100 mammal species popular for the black and white rhinoceros.

The game drives can be done in the morning, which is a good opportunity for catching up with the early birders, and in the evenings when the sun is setting down the animals come out of their resting zones to get their last prey before heading back to their dens. The night game drive is the perfect time for sighting the night watchers.

Other possible sightings include the big five – African leopard, African buffalo, black and white rhinos plus the Hippos. Other species include giraffe, hippopotamus, spotted hyena, blue wildebeest, plains zebra, cheetah, Thomson’s gazelle, Grant’s gazelle, common eland, impala, hartebeest, waterbuck, common warthog, olive baboon, black-backed jackal, common ostrich, Crocodiles, wildebeest, zebra. Visiting ivory burning site monument

The pre-historic site where 12 tonnes of ivory were burnt by the former president Daniel Arap Moi in 1989. The ivory is believed to have been intercepted from the poachers ready to be sold on the black market. The act of burning the ivory was to show commitment to protecting and sustaining the elephant species and also to stop the ivory trade. The site continued to be used to burn out other tones of rhino horns and other products related to animals like the skin, medical barks, and sandalwood, currently, a monument was constructed, and remains of the ivory ashes are also visible.

NATURE WALK

The nature walks start from the entrance gate to the forest and the board walks over the river.

The walkway provides the best views of wildlife species in the park,

Nature walks can be done in the morning, evening, and night timings in an accompaniment of a ranger guide, the further you go in the sanctum, completely depends on your level of fitness, as it is a foot activity.

NAIROBI ANIMAL ORPHANAGE

The orphanage is found inside the park and it was majorly created for wildlife care. Injured birds and animals receive treatment from here. It also acts as a rehabilitation center for the different wildlife species.

DAVID AND DAPHNE SHELDRICK ELEPHANT ORPHANAGE

The elephant orphanage located at the backdrop of Nairobi city, was created as a rescue and rehabilitation center for the elephants and Rhinos from parks and reserves, The elephants are nursed, rehabilitated, and habituated and later taken to Tsavo National Park to enjoy the wild at an age deemed fit.

The orphanage is open from 11 am to 12 pm daily just 1 hour open per day to participate in the diurnal activities of the elephants like bathing and feeding.

It is also used as a research center on the elephant’s lives. You can also adopt an elephant for USD 50 per year.
