Nairobi is the capital city of Kenya. The name Nairobi is translated from the Maa language to mean a place of cool waters in English. Nairobi was named after the Nairobi River streaming through the city, a city that was founded in 1899 by the colonialists due to its fast growth as a railway depot for Uganda –Kenya it surpassed all other cities in development and it was rewarded as the capital city in 1963 after Kenya attained independence.
Nairobi National Park was the first national park in Kenya. Compared to the other national parks in Africa, the park remains the smallest stretching at 117.21 km2 with a 7 km distance from Nairobi’s center.
Nairobi national park has been in existence since 1946 when it was gazetted as a national park, different from the other parks, it is electric fenced on the three sides namely the northern, eastern, and western boundaries, the southern side is not fenced off to allow animals move from the park and the nearby kitenge plains.
Even though the park is small and closer to the city, the park has a variety of wildlife species habituating in the savannah grasslands, the segmented Acacia woodlands, the rocky valleys and the gorges in the park thou popular for being a sanctuary for the black rhinoceros, other species include lion, leopard, African buffalo, black rhinoceros, giraffe, hippopotamus, spotted hyena, blue wildebeest, plains zebra, cheetah, Thomson’s gazelle, Grant’s gazelle, common eland, impala, hartebeest, waterbuck, common warthog, olive baboon, black-backed jackal, common ostrich, Crocodiles, wildebeest, zebra. The park is also home to several bird species with over 500 permanent species and 20 migratory species like the African Crowned Eagle and Kori Bustard, Secretary bird, African skimmer, Grey-crowned Crane, Bateleur, Augur Buzzard, Martial Eagle, Fox Kestrel, African Fish Eagle and many more.
The Elephant Orphanage located at the backdrop of Nairobi city, was created as a rescue and rehabilitation center for the elephants and Rhinos from parks and reserves, The elephants are nursed, rehabilitated, and habituated and later taken to Tsavo National Park to enjoy the wild at an age deemed fit.
The orphanage is open from 11 am to 12 pm daily as visiting time, with just 1 hour open per day to participate in the diurnal activities of the elephants like bathing and feeding. It is also used as a research center on the elephant’s lives. Visitors are encouraged to adopt an elephant at USD 50 per year.
The museum was founded in 1920 and it is one of the most amazing and beautiful places to visit while on your Nairobi trip. The place is suitable for a historical, cultural, and artistic research tour of Kenya and its people.
The museum is open from 0730hrs to 0300hrs each day.
The National Railway Museum is located next to the Nairobi railway station that has been in existence since 1971 with the aim and purpose of conserving and exhibiting artifacts and information related to Kenya railroads. It is also used as a research center for travelers interested in Railway construction.
The international conference center was constructed in a cylinder shape with 28 floors and it is the ninth highest building in Kenya located in Kenya’s city square. The Kenyatta Conference Building is used for conferences, seminars, workshops, and exhibitions and it has been in existence since 1967 when it was commissioned by Jomo Kenyatta. It has hosted many regional and international conferences a factor that promotes Kenyan tourism.
The Ngong hills are among the popular weekend spots in Kenya. Ngong means Rhinoceros springs derived from a spring near Ngong Town. Ngong Hills offers some of the magnificent views of the Great Rift Valley which is home to different wildlife species.
Some of the activities that can be carried out in Ngong hills include: bird watching, camping, hiking, and zip lining Plus restaurants are available for a delicious meal and accommodation for an overnight stay.
Kenya National Archives is located in the suburbs of the central business district of Nairobi.
The archives were started up in 1965 and on it, a Murumbi gallery was established on the first floor containing different pre-historic collections and artifacts from different parts of Africa that are considered of Natural cultural value.
Mamba settlement is a must-visit on a cultural tour, it is located on the 12km south of Nairobi.
Mamba farm is more of an educational and research site for its inhabitants including the crocodiles, and ostriches. The best time to visit is in the afternoon when the animals are feeding.
Paradise Lost is a stunning and amusing oasis found about 10kms at the edge of the city with a variety of tourism attractions but most popular for the labyrinth of caves formed by the flow of lava connected by twisting patterns and you could need to crawl sometimes, the caves form a maze-like structure which offers a vivid experience for the guests.
Clients get a full close encounter with the Rothschild’s giraffe while at the giraffe center situated at the edge of Nairobi National Park.
The giraffe center is a rehabilitation project to rescue the giraffes that have been traumatized and also to protect the extinct species by being a breeding center. Visitors while at the giraffe center participate in the education programs, giraffe feeding, and giraffe kissing among others.
