About Amboseli National Park

Amboseli National Park is one of the most visited and top national parks in Kenya situated in the southern part of Kenya in the remote area of Kajiado County nearing Tanzania. The park is near Mount Kilimanjaro popular for having the highest peak in Africa. The park was named after Lake Amboseli and the name Amboseli is translated to mean salty dust.

The pre-historic park was gazetted as a national park in 1974 after being a game reserve from 1906 and later it was awarded the world heritage status by UNESCO in 1991 to conserve and protect the different flora and fauna in the park. The reserve was exposed to the world by Jeremy Thompson in 1883 who bravely entered the Masai land that was greatly feared due to their alleged hostility, he was amused by the too much wildlife that he sighted and he could not wait to share the park’s beauty to the outside world.

Amboseli National Park is also known as the land of elephants because it has the largest population of elephants in Kenya but it is also a sanctum to other wild species including bush babies, waterbucks, buffalos, baboons, aardwolf, leopards, jackals, lions, fringed eared, Thomson’s, Grants gazelles, Hippopotamus, zebras, elephants and the nocturnal cats like lions

Attractions found in Amboseli National Park include: Sinet delta mostly visited by birders with a variety of bird species in the bushes and acacia of the delta attracting many giraffes, Lake Amboseli, observation hill offering the best Ariel view of the park

CULTURAL TOURS

Enjoy an artistic and cultural tour around the Masai land. The Masai were the first inhabitants of this land and after making the sanctuary a reserve, a portion of land was left for human settlement, which led to the formation of the local community of the Masai people who have co-existed with wildlife for hundreds of years.

Once at the Masai Village, the local elders meet you and introduce you to their families, the Masai homestead has around 50 traditional houses from where you will learn and experience the Masai daily lives. You do not have to worry about the language barrier; there is always an interpreter available on-site to help you understand the maa language.

The Masai people are extremely attached to wildlife and this is portrayed in their way of living, the food they eat, the cattle keeping, their kind of entertainment, the style of their homes, and their burial ground among others. The Masai people completely rely on the cattle for survival; they get their food from pastoralism like milk and meat.

Support the local community by booking a local visit around Masai land and buying some of their crafts.

HOT AIR BALLOON

Hot air balloons offer the most incredible sightings of the Nyika plateau, rain forests, and the great scenery of the park. The day starts with you enjoying a delicious breakfast before proceeding to the Hot air balloon headquarters for a briefing from the pilot about the dos and don’ts while you are above the earth’s crust.

Proceed to the basket and jump in, The basket ascends slowly with a thrusting sound as the balloon inflates, a sound that vibrates the wilderness increasing your adrenaline, a very thrilling and unforgettable experience it is! When the balloon reaches the firmament, it starts to float. The excursion lasts for about 2 hours weather dependent. Enjoy the aerial view of the flora and fauna; intersect with the birds in the sky, and watch the wild animals hunt for their prey in the savannah plains and how the different wild species defend themselves from the carnivores.

CAMPING

Enjoy a night in the wild surrounded by the natural habitats which is a fascinating activity and also a great opportunity for encountering the nocturnal animals like the spotted hyenas and the best chance for catching sight of the early birders.

Embark on hiking the tallest mountain in Africa standing at 5896 meters high, which is a backdrop of the park. Mountain Kilimanjaro is a dormant extinct volcano and it is the tallest freestanding mountain with a whole year snowcapped peak.

Mountain Kilimanjaro hiking takes about five to nine days through the seven main routings from the southern and northern sides of the mountain. The routes are Marangu, Machame, Lemosho, Shira, Rongai, Northern Circuit and Umbwe.

Highly experienced guides for your safety who come along with a medical team and medical equipment like bottled oxygen, portable stretcher, and other first aid medications to secure your health. It is a great view to take a health checkup before embarking on the hike.

OBSERVATION HILLS

The observation hill is located on the western side of the park and it was named after the fact that it is located at a higher altitude than other plains in the park making it the best spot to observe and sight the animals on an Ariel view, a very beautiful spot for visitors to view the park.

The place is well set up with tables and benches in a shaded environment suitable for a lunch date or even a sundowner experience as you take in the stunning views of nature.
